I’ve been wrestling with what to do with an empty area of my patio that presents both spatial and utilitarian problems. I found the perfect solution by repurposing a salvaged barn door into a patio table. This area of my patio is little used, mainly because there is nothing there to be used.
As you know from my previous posts I try to be mindful of the natural traffic flow around my patio and have found the easiest way to determine this is by watching how my friends interact, where they gather and settle and feel most comfortable. It’s like the kitchen thing; everyone always gathers in the kitchen no matter how small or crowded it is.
So, I had an opportunity to observe ‘human interaction’ in this space a few weeks ago when I hosted a wine tasting (A Taste of Spring): I set up my old dining room table in this problem area and watched how people connected, in-between sips of wine. I noticed there was an easy flow to the way my friends gathered and interacted so I decided having a table seating in this area would work really well.
Now, the utilitarian part of the problem is that I wanted a table that would be suitable for both eating and relaxing around. Think dinner table and coffee table.
One way to solve my empty space problem would be to buy a patio set (with two tables at different heights). Well that’s not me, there are few things on my patio that are not either used or salvaged (or in my house for that matter). Besides, I want a no fuss solution; this table would have to stand up to changes in the weather.
The solution would be to make a table with adjustable legs. Sounds easy, right?
After rummaging around I found the old door to my barn and decided it would make a perfect table. It was flat so water would not pool on top of it after a rain storm and it was also the right size: I could use it as a buffet or seat 6 for a sit down meal.
So, now I know what I want to do with the space, I know what type of table I want and after giving it a lot of thought, how I will repurpose a salvaged barn door into an adjustable patio table. Stay tuned because I’ll post regular updates on my progress.
