Wow! The repurposed salvaged barn door table is finally finished!
I admit it took longer than I anticipated because of those little unexpected life events. But the table is not only beautiful, it’s versatile. The total project time from start to finish was around 6 hours at a cost of $185.00 for the steel pipe and flanges. The barn door I had salvaged after renovating my barn.
I started this project to solve a problem. There was a large empty space on my patio that I wanted to use. I had previously set my old dining room table in this area for wine tastings and dinner parties which worked well, but hauling the table in and out of the barn was a pain in the butt.
I also envisioned this area as a place to relax with friends around a low ‘coffee’ style table surrounded by comfy chairs. I now have the best of both worlds.
I re-purposed the salvaged barn door into a table top. I’ve seen tables with ‘saw horse’ style legs that I really liked but I wanted a cleaner look. I wanted the versatility of 2 table heights for the same spot.
To make this happen I used 1 1/4 inch galvanized steel pipe cut into 8 lengths for the legs:
- 4 18-inch pipes for a ‘chat-height’ table
- 4 28-inch lengths for a dining height table
- 8 1 1/4-inch circular flanges: 4 screwed into the table to attach the legs and 4 for the leg ‘feet’.
I tried to find a local plumbing supply vendor to buy the pipe. Some didn’t carry galvanized steel, some didn’t cut the pipe and none threaded the pipe. I then turned to my favorite home supply store, Lowes. They had a good selection of pipe and they cut and threaded the pipe while I waited (20 minutes) at no additional cost.
Final Steps:
Once the sealant dried, I attached the flanges to the bottom of the table top with screws, screwed the pipe legs into the flanges and stood her up. Easy. Now I have 2 tables in one!
I’m now on the look out for some comfy chairs …
Update June 30, 2015:
I love this table!

Update: Almost a year later and with a lot of use the table is holding strong. Before putting the table out this season, I sprayed all the pipe threads with WD-40 and I am getting ready to add another layer of wood sealant to the top and underside of the table. I love the adjustable height.

I had a dinner party for 7 last eve and we gathered around the table (at chat-height) for apps and cocktails … it was the perfect height with plenty of room but still felt intimate. I love this table!
