Wow! July has turned into one busy month … all fun and good but has put me a little behind schedule on this project. I wanted the barn door table finished for the 50th Birthday Celebration for one of my best friends whom I’ve known since college. Obviously that didn’t happen but now I’m back on track.
Progress to date:
The bottom of the barn door had some rot which had to be sawed off.
I smoothed out the table top and edges by using a super fine sandpaper and sanded it by hand. Love the finish –
Rubi supervising my progress –
And the big finish … literally. I applied the first coat of sealant using a small paint brush to get into the cracks of the wood and then used a roller to coat the whole surface. The clear stain sealant really made the grain of the wood pop –
I used “Flood Penetrating Wood Finish” clear coat which I bought at Lowes. I have never used this product so I will monitor how it holds up under the sun and rain. I will say that I love the look and feel of the table top so far.
Next I’ll clean up the underside of the barn door and apply a couple of coats of sealant and then I will finish the top and attach the legs.
Again, this salvaged barn door table will serve as a ‘chat height’ table to gather around but will also be used as a dining table.
Stay tuned …
